Man out of ignorance and petty mindedness thinks that he is the architect of achievements. He makes a history of successes and weaves "a philosophy" out of failures. Very often, success has many fathers and failure is left to remain an orphan. Neither of them is the child of anybody. There is a supreme being doing everything; we are all but instruments.
Arjuna was overcome by despondency and therefore declined to wield weapons on the battlefield. He wanted to withdraw from war, from all activity. Sri Krishna taught him the Gita to make him fight. At last Sri Krishna told him the truth. "Arjuna, you think you are the killer and doer. No, never. You are but a tool in my hands. Be thankful to me, you are chosen to be an instrument to do my work. Remember, even if you don't do, the work will not stop; I do my work myself." Then he displayed his cosmic form in which Arjuna was astounded to see the mighty warriors being killed by Krishna in the jaws of death, in the fires or his frown, in the flood of his wrath.. Arjuna was able to understand the truth. It is foolish to think that we are doing everything. In spite of us and irrespective of us, the world and its activities go on for ever. Let us learn to realise that we are only tools. Let's by Gods' grace willingly submit ourselves to the will of God and become worthy instruments in His hands, and thereby devote ourselves, like a reed becoming a flute. Everybody is important, but nobody is indispensable. Nobody is useless; everybody is useful. Nobody is unfit to grow; everybody can go to the top.
Shivaji the mighty king felt that he was doing a great work. He was a little egoistic. To set him right, master Swami Ramadas took him to a spot and showed a frog lying in a stone. And the frog was safe within. "Who is feeding it? Who is caring for it?" Is it shivaji or the Almighty God?" Shivaji was humbled.
It is God who does all, who feeds all, who looks after all. In our petty mindedness, on account of our ego, we think, we are the doers. We are bound by "I and mine". Drop them and we are free; and become better instruments.
