Slokas 8 & 9

Chapter -13   Slokas —8,9
Dispassion for sense-objects and absence of egoism, seeing misery and evil in birth, death, old age and sickness, non-attachment and non-identification with son, wife, home, etc, always being even-minded whether good or evil befalls, unswerving devotion to Me through the Yoga of nonseparation, resorting to solitude, and aversion for company, always being devoted to spiritual knowledge, perception of the aim of the knowledge of Truth all this is called knowledge. What is different from this is igorance.

Siddhartha was a prince. He was brought up in the palace amidst luxuries. Never did he know the negative side of life.

Once, he went out and saw to his dismay the darker side of life. He saw death and disease, old age and poverty, sorrow and suffering. He also saw a monk who was able to be serene and sober unaffected by the pairs of opposites.

Siddhartha then began to reflect upon life; looked at his young wife and small child. He wanted to know the Truth about everything.

He resolved to realize truth, took his horse and proceeded to the far off woods. At long last, he realized the truth and discovered the cause for human suffering. It is desire that is at the root of all anguish and anxiety. And it is ignorance that is at the root of all sorrow and suffering.

To be peaceful, we have to be fearless. To be fearless we have to know the truth. Truth alone is the dispeller of ignorance.

Buddha is one who has realized the truth. Buddha is one who is ever peaceful. Buddha is one who is always kind and compassionate.

"One should constantly remember death. Nothing will survive death. We are born into this world to perform certain duties, like the people who come from the countryside to Calcutta on business. If a visitor goes to a rich man's garden, the superintendent says to him. This is our garden', 'This is our lake', and so forth. But if the superientendent is dismissed for some misdeed, he can't carry away even his mango-wood chest. He sends it secretly by the gate-keeper."--- Sri Ramakrishna
