The world is composed of five elements. The body too is made of the five elements air, fire, water, earth and space. And there are three qualities found in the cosmos and the mind.
The mind has to transcend the three gunas, sattva, rajas and tamas to be free from bondage. The three are of three different colours : sattva is white, rajas is red and tamas is dark black. All the three are like robbers depriving us of our wealth of freedom. The three of them not only rob us but proceed further in diverse ways. Tamas tries to strike us; rajas tries to bind us and sattva tries to show us the way out. All the three are to be shaken off to be liberated from them. All the three are but shackles whether they are made of gold or silver or iron.
During the day, we have the three gunas. Nights are tamasic, day is rajasic and early hours before sunrise are sattvic. Sattva shows us the path of wisdom. Rajas keeps us on the path of dynamic work. Tamas induces us to be lazy and drowsy.
Sattva is fresh food of soft and sweet nature. Rajas is hot food of spices and Tamas is stale food of fermented stuff.
"The tidal wave of Western civilization is now rushing over the length and breadth of the country. It won't do now simply to sit in meditation on mountain tops without realizing in the least its usefulness. Now is wanted intense Karmayoga, with unbounded courage and indomitable strength in the heart. Then only will the people of the country be roused.."--- Swami Vivekananda
