It is faith that is essential for our progress. Faith, we should have in scriptures. Faith, we should have in our masters and elders and finally faith, we should have in our own selves. Scriptures are but time tested experiences of great researchers called rishis. Masters and elders are but the embodiment of affection for us. And faith ultimately and intrinsically is hidden in us.
Let us believe in them all. A person is reading the Gita-the celestial scripture. In it is found an assurance by God, ' I shall look after the welfare of those who think of me always.' The reader is doubtful about it on account of his poverty. So he disbelieved the sentence and struck off those lines in red ink. But lo and behold, God in the form of a boy with blood oozing from the wounds on the back, delivered all the requirements needed for the household that very day. The scripture never tells a lie. Have faith in God. He helps us and looks after us.
Kabir was in need of a guru. Swami Ramananda was chosen to be his master. But the master was not likely to initiate him into the holy sadhana. The aspirant Kabir, therefore, chose to lie down on the steps. The holy master while going to the river stepped on him and so said, 'Ram, Ram' in regret. Kabir got the mantra. His faith in the master was such that he became a devotee of excellence through the initiation he got accidentally from his master.
Anjaneya was unaware of his strength and ability. His faith in himself was dormant. Jambavan kindled it and the fire of faith in himself was roused. Lo and behold, he flew to Lanka and saw Sita.
'Brahma vid Brahmaiva bhavati' knower of brahman becomes Brahman. Constantly thinking of Sri Krishna, Gopis of Vrindavan could attained Krishna consciousness and identify themselves with Sri Krishna.
Faith, faith is the secret of success.
"What makes the difference between man and man is the difference in this Shraddha and nothing else. What makes one man great and another weak and low is this Shraddha."--- Swami Vivekananada
