Sloka 4, 5 & 6

Chapter -17   Slokas —4,5,6
The Sattvika worship the gods, the Rajasika (worship) the Yakshas and Rakshasas, while others, the Tamasika men, worship spirits and goblins. Those men who practise severe austerities not enjoined by the Scriptures, being given to ostentation and self-conceit, possessed of desire, attachment and pertinacity, and senseless, torture the elements in the body, as also Me residing within it - know them to be of demoniac resolves.

Most of us are worshippers of Gods because we have many desires. For the fulfilment of our desires we pray to Gods. When the desires are for sense-pleasures and supremacy over others without ever caring for any body's welfare, we resort to rigorous austerities for quick results. And that is demoniac tapas. Self-motivation and self-mortification are resorted to by asuras for obtaining boons from Brahma.

When our desires are noble and profitable to others as well, the tapas we make is rajasic. We want thereby to be conspicuous. Our tapas then is detrimental to none.

When we want to be peaceful and spread peace among all through wisdom, then the tapas is called satwic Tapas. It is sweet and soul-elevating.

Above all is the most silent and powerful tapas meant for self-realisation or God-realisation. It is beyond the three gunas.

"The tapas and the other hard Yogas that were practised in other Yugas do not work now. What is needed in this yuga is giving, helping others. What is meant by Dana? The highest of gifts is the giving of spiritual knowledge, the next is the giving of secular knowledge, and the next is saving of life, the last is giving food and drink. He who gives spiritual knowledge saves the soul from many and many a birth.

Ask nothing; want nothing in return. Give what you have to give; it will come back to you, but do not think of that now, it will come back multiplied a thousandfold; but the attention must not be on that. Yet have the power to give: give, and there it ends. Ask, therefore, nothing in return; but the more you give, the more will come to you. The quicker you can empty the air out of this room, the quicker it will be filled up by the external air."--- Swami Vivekananada
