Chapter -18   Slokas —28
An agent who is unsteady, vulgar, arrogant, deceptive, overbearing, indolent, despondent and procrastinating, is said to be Tamasika.

Lethargy or laziness is at the root of all evils. Religion or spirituality never preaches or supports laziness or escapism. To run away from work or worship is Tamas. Work is worship. Work becomes holy and sacred when performed with sraddha, the sraddha that we have while worshipping a deity. Worship too loses its sanctity, if done mechanically. In temples we find a monotonous ritual without any devotion. Nothing is achieved, if a sankhu or conch is blown or camphor fire is waved or a coconut is broken without the sincerity of heart's devotion. It is but a dry ritual taking us nowhere, leaving us where we are and sometimes causing disrespect to rituals and religion. Religion is realisation. It should not be reduced to 'Don't touchism' or 'kitchen religion' or a disgusting habit of a dullard.

So also, in work, we should not allow indolence or inertia to creep in. What we can do for ourselves, let us not depend upon others or Gods. The man who is lazy to look after himself will not be looked after by anybody. God helps those who help themselves. A man was quietly and lazily resting when the strong wind was about to blow away his hut. Instead of putting forth his efforts for protection, he chose to depend upon divine help. When he found no help forthcoming, he came out of the hut with disgust. This is how lazy people end up in lives.

Neither in worship nor at work should anyone be lazy. It will not be approved of by anybody including the Gods.

"Let us all work hard, my brethren; this is no time for sleep. On our work depends the coming of the India of the future. She is there ready waiting. She is only sleeping. Arise and awake, and see her seated here, on her eternal throne, rejuvenated, more glorious than she ever was - this Motherland of ours."--- Swami Vivekananada
