Dhriti, determination and firmness of resolve are essential to achieve anything great and worthy. The higher the ideal, the greater the ordeal. So, firmer should be the determination.
When the ideal is noble and divine, when the dhriti is unshaken, it is satvic determination. Gauthama the Buddha resolved firmly never to return home without realising the Truth. He sought to know the truth and he attained it. Let us resolve to reach the top without ever looking back or falling.
A farmer decided to have his fields ploughed and watered before the sunset not caring for the difficulties or limitations or constraints. He resolved to overcome every impediment. He started his work with utmost sraddha. His wife called him to come home for food. But the man of resolve refused.' Stop not till the goad is reached' is his resolve. And this is rajasic sraddha. Students and aspirants in every field of study and in every walk of life need this stem determination to achieve , what they want to achieve.
The other farmer stopped the work the moment he looked at his wife and went home for food and rest. His resolve was feeble and short lived. It is no determination at all. And that is Tamasic.
Let not anybody be weak and feeble either in resolve or in effort. Let us hope high and rise high through firmness of resolve and hard work.
"To succeed, you must have tremendous perseverance, tremendous will. "I will drink the ocean, " says the persevering soul, "at my will mountains will crumble up. " Have that sort of energy, that sort of will, work hard and you will reach the goal."--- Swami Vivekananada
