We very often suffer for want
of rain. Scientifically, there are many reasons for less or little rain.
The chief reason is that the yajna and the spirit of yajna are on the
decline. When we are selfish, rains fail us. Love of nature prompts us
to protect nature, her trees and forests. If we love nature, we do not
disturb her, nor do we pollute her. Want of love is want of service. And
want of service is want of yajna.
To love is to serve. To serve is to sacrifice our selfishness.
When we worship God, we love God and serve God. Thereby we do what is
pleasing to God. God is Truth. So we try to be truthful. God is love and
so we try to be loving. To love God is to serve God. And that is yajna.
Rishis are researchers who have discovered precious
truths in every walk of life, in every field of study. And their findings
are given to us so that we can make our lives happy and comfortable. Therefore,
we are expected to be grateful to them. And our gratefulness is seen in
our service to the rishis. Service to the rishis is nothing but our faithful
adherence to the truths discovered by them. Let us remember them and worship
them by reading the literature produced by them, by following the path
shown by them.
To read the holy texts, to recite the sacred incantations,
to perform the holy rituals with a thorough understanding of the scriptures
and the science behind them and the unselfish adoration of all knowledge
are but the rishi-yajna.
"Acharya Devo bhava " is to exhort us to worship
the rishis by studying their scriptures, affectionately handed over to
us by them. Let us also be devoted to God by being truthful and sincere,
loving and servicing.
