Vanaprastha Ashrama, a stage of life
Human life constitutes a pilgrimage to the Eternal through different stages, namely, Brahmacharya, Grihastha, Vanaprastha, and finally Sannyasa, which come one after another. Man moves on to the third stage when the responsibilities of the Grihastha are over. Then, one has to decide on one’s own whether to live with one’s children in an absolutely detached way or to retire to the forest for a quiet, solitary, and meditative life. According to our scriptures, simplicity, study, meditation and goodwill towards all should be the hallmark of a person at this stage of life as a vanaprasthi.
BHAGVAN SRIRAMAKRISHNA taught that a householder (GRIHASTHA) must go into solitude (away from his family) now and then and practice spiritual discipline to realize God. Our scriptures also advocate to lead the Vanaprastha life after the duties are over for householders. Some devotees are literally following the teachings of BHAGVAN SRI RAMAKRISHNA and residing in the Ashrama for a few days now and then and doing sadhana. Thus, one of the purposes of establishing the Ashrama is being fulfilled.
History of the Ashrama
